Government Diesel Emissions Standards & RV ' s

I have just returned from Pennsylvania/public RV trade show and while looks a new motorhome on Freightliner Custom chassis I realized what seemed to be that a small tank located under one of the gates of external storage bin. The stopper in the tank had stands for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) letters which was later discovered. Had no idea what was flowing exhaust from diesel, therefore headed to the display of Freightliner to find out. The representative of Freightliner was extremely knowledgeable and helpful in explaining what was DEF, and decided after returning home to further research.

It DEF was a result of the last rounds of the mandates of the EPA on diesel engine emissions standards. These EPA mandates on diesel emissions have a long history. For over 25 years, EPA has aggressively increased manufacturers, strict diesel exhaust emission standards in particular in the areas of the subject of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). These exhaust emissions are by-products of combustion (or incomplete combustion) of diesel fuel.I think that the PM as soot or smoke that will be emitted from the system exhaust. oxides of nitrogen the result of a bad reaction between nitrogen and oxygen at high temperatures created by the combustion process.

In 2000 the EPA signed emission standards to emissions of PM, designed to take full effect by the release of the 2007 model year vehicles. This leads us to DEF and mandates of EPA 2010, designed to reduce the emission of nitrous oxide, amounts released to the atmosphere.

In the industry of bungalows are everything but an OEM (OEM) chose a process called selective catalytic reduction or (SCR) to respond to this new standard EPA.Sencillamente SCR adds a liquid exhaust from diesel and a catalyst that is designed to eliminate additional WP and emissions from the combustion of the diesel process.

Pros & NOCs SCR

So does this mean for new diesel RV owner?

Pros:

1) SCR gives best 5% to 8% fuel economy.

(2) More torque & horsepower in comparison with a similar engine (EGR) exhaust gas recirculation technology 2007.

Cons:

(1) The owner shall be to maintain the DEF tank headed. the word is DEF abundantly available in centres travel & auto parts stores.

(2) It is possible for the DEF, formed by two-thirds of part of water solution to freeze. The word is the tank DEF is isolated and the system uses heated lines to deliver fluid to help avoid freezing.

(3) DEF can degrade, but it would take 125 degrees of direct heat during a period of time, which is unlikely to ever happen.

(4) If for any reason that does not fill tank the DEF and runs out of the engine will decrease the speed of approximately 30 mph until more DEF is added to the system of nuevo.Hay indicators in the coach that will alert you in long enough to fill the tank before it runs dry.

(5) The new costos.La technology increase is secure that affect prices, but the jury is whether projected increase fuel economy will offset the increase in price over a period of time.

Therefore, like it or not, this is the system of choice used by the majority of the RV manufacturer to meet or exceed EPA 2010 diesel emissions standards.

What's next?

Get ready for the next round of the mandates of the EPA.Ahora exhaust that comes out of the exhaust pipe is probably cleaner that what is happening in intake (in many parts of the country) we need to brace ourselves for what the siguiente.parece that the next Government approved EPA and mandates DOT are aimed to GHG emissions and increase fuel economy greenhouse .these new diesel emissions standards will progressively be 2014-2018.

New rules imposed are sure to significantly increase the cost of a motorhome diesel again, and leads us to the question will be the ends justify the means?

Is that the judge.

Happy Camping
